Junior & Youth Classes
|The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club Sailing Academy is known for its accomplished instructors, attention to safety and the ability to cater to each student’s needs.|
We are passionate about introducing people to sailing at all levels. For first-time sailors we offer a coaching pathway to take students from the beginner level to competent sailors. If interested, students can also join our advanced training groups to involve themselves in competitive sailing.
The RBYC Sailing Academy is Bermuda’s only official RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Training Centre. The RYA is recognized worldwide and their certifications are highly respected. The curriculum is supported by the appropriate RYA shore-based theory courses. Lessons and packages are offered between September and May and are based upon availability. Please note, RBYC members receive a preferred rate.
Academy Sailing Terms
- Winter (February – March)
- Spring (April – June)
- Summer (July & August)
- Autumn (September – December)
The Summer term is offered on a weekly basis and the only programme with open registration for both Members and the Public. Children can sign up for a single week or for the entire 9-week term. RBYC encourages those children who are interested in participating in the Autumn, Winter and/or Spring terms to participate in the Summer term. This prepares those students for the year ahead and allows for us to properly place them in the correct group. The Bermuda Sailing Association may be able to provide bursary assistance for Summer 2017. Please inquire with our Sailing Office.
The Junior Sailing Academy is divided into various groups. Click on the plus sign for more details.
Catered to children between the ages of 5-6 years old, this group generally has little to no boating experience. Under direct supervision of RYBC instructors, children are introduced to the Optimist dinghy and sailing basics. At this level, children are taught safety, how to move and balance in boats, and basic maneuvers such as tack and jibe. The ultimate goal is to have each child in this group complete a basic triangle course.
The aim of the Optimist development group is to hone in on their current skills set and further their sailing knowledge and introduce them into a racing environment. The goal is to move these sailors into the ‘Optimist Racers’ level where they will become competent sailors.
The aim of the Optimist racer class is to develop their current skills as well as teaching them new racing skills which will enable them to progress into more advanced racers.
For those who are interested in racing, this group is made up of children from the ages of 9 – 15 that are keen to take their sailing to the next level. Children in this group compete locally and internationally
The Double-Handed group includes children of mixed ability and is available to children 11 years and older. Using the RS Feva, children are taught the independence, communication and teamwork that come hand in hand with double-handed sailing. Our competent RBYC instructors also teach skills that are invaluable to life as well as transferable to almost any form of sailing.
The SL16 is a World Sailing Youth Pathway boat for multi-hulled racing. This group is open to 15+ year olds who have demonstrated an interest and skill set in double-handed sailing including spinnaker work. In the SL16 students learn the ultimate importance of team work as both skipper and crew have to think fast while out on trapeze harnesses. Eligibility to this group is at the sole discretion of the Sailing Director.
Our youth move into Lasers when they outgrow the Optimist dingy if they wish to continue single-handed sailing. This group is generally 14 years old and over who already have racing experience. This group receives high performance coaching with personal goal setting. With this group, RBYC encourages peer coaching to help develop confidence, build new skills, share ideas, teach one another and learn how to solve problems. We offer Laser 4.7 and Radial rig classes.
