The RBYC Sailing Academy offers junior & youth sailing courses following the Royal Yachting Association's Youth Training Scheme.

Course Overview: This course is often run in conjunction with Intermediate Racing and prepares the sailor for open and international level competition. There is a focus on theory such as rules, race tactics and fitness. This level is available in all class boats at the RBYC Sailing Academy.

RYA Junior & Youth Levels

Course Overview: This is the foundation course for learning to sail.The course will give you the understanding of how a boat sails, with the experience of steering/handling your boat under supervision from a qualified instructor. It will also teach you the basic theory behind sailing as well as understanding where the wind is coming from.

Course Overview: Enjoyed your stage 1 course? Now you are ready for Stage 2! This course will provide you with more sailing skills in order to gain more confidence as a sailor. This course will cover various elements such as rope work, rules of the road, capsizing a boat & safety. On completion of this course you will be able to tack the boat, control the speed of the boat and understand the basic principles of sailing.

Course Overview: This course provides you with the fundamental knowledge for you to rig/de-rig, launch and recovery, meteorology and sailing theory. These skills enable the sailor to launch/recover and sail a dinghy around a triangle course in moderate conditions.

Course Overview: This course covers the same skills in Stage 3 but runs in a double-handed boat such as an RS Feva rather than an Optimist. It will teach the sailor the skills set to solve a range of potential problems afloat as a team as well as improving communication. It will give you the skills to do both roles in the boat: skipper and crew. If you've already completed Stage 3 in a double-handed boat this course is optional.

Course Overview: This course will give you the necessary knowledge, skills and confidence in order for you to take part in club level racing in suitable wind conditions. Our instructor will go through vital information such as starting procedure and how to get around the race track. As well as touching on theory topics such as race preparation, race tactics and strategy. This course can be offered in our Optimist, RS Feva, Laser, 29er and Multi-hulls.

Course Overview: This course continues to build on the skills that you have learnt in 'start racing'. By providing you with more knowledge on key areas of racing such as race tactics and strategy. This will provide you with an insight on what the top guys are doing at club level. This course will also further your awareness of boat handling at a start line and give you a better understanding on how to fine tune your boat in order to get the optimum boat speed.
